Foraging Walk With Wildman Steve Brill
Time & Location
About the Event
At 10 AM, Tuesday, May 14, “Wildman” Steve Brill, America’s go-to guy for foraging, will lead a 3-hour foraging event on the grounds of Haven for Humanity, 317 Mud Pond Rd, in Livingston Manor, NY. The event will consist of a 2-hour foraging tour and an hour of vegan cooking, followed by a book signing and lunch. Bring your kids!
The grounds of this wholistic environmental education community in the Catskill Mountains is brimming with edible herbs, greens, roots, and shoots of mid-spring. Sunny lawns and meadows will probably provide large quantities of young lamb's quarters, as well as lemony sheep sorrel, and spicy mustard greens such as poor man's pepper and field pennycress.
Disturbed habitats and edge habitats may feature pokeweed, a highly-prized vegetable in the Deep South that can kill you if not harvested prepared properly!
Woodland habitats may provide sour greenbrier shoots. We could also find root beer-flavored sassafras, wintergreen-flavored black birch, and allspice-flavored common spicebush. Garlic-flavored garlic mustard will cover the floor of open woodlands, unless Italian insects discover it before we do!
If it rains enough beforehand, we might also find spring agaricus mushrooms, fairy ring mushrooms, chicken and wine-cap stropharia mushrooms.
The 3-hour event, which includes 2 hours of foraging and 1 hour of cooking, begins at 10 AM, Tuesday, May 14, at Haven for Humanity, 317 Mud Pond Rd., Livingston Manor, NY.
The suggested donation is $20/adult, $10/child under 12. Please call (845) 807-7407 at least 24 hours in advance to sign up.
